Founded in 1892 by Emanuel Ciner, as a fine jewelry company, the switch to costume jewelry was made in the early 1930s. Ciner was known for their focus on finely crafted pieces that drew on their fine jewelry heritage. Only the best Swarovski rhinestones and Japanese faux pearls were used. Many of their gold pieces were plated in 18K. The company is still in business in New York under the direction of granddaughter Patricia (Pat) Ciner Hill who began running the company in 1978. Now in her 70s, Hill still writes orders for retail buyers in the company's wholesale show room.
