They remained popular during the 1950s and morphed into variations including openwork half-hats comprised of a wired piping frame with flowers, feathers or other trims. Check out Madge's article on half hats

Gerber was a major department store in Memphis Tennessee and was started by John Gerber in 1880 and expanded over the years, eventually taking an entire downtown block. Gerber caused a sensation in 1949 with the first escalator in Memphis. Other suburban Gerber outlets soon followed.  After a series of major fires in the 1960s the store was closed for good in 1974. The other locations were also closed one by one. The building was torn down in the 1980s and a hotel is now in it's place.
