        Condition: Good

One of a kind vintage item. Get it before it’s gone.

Vintage 1950s brown half hat with wrap bow.  This half hat perches on top of the head which allows it to fit most and flatter any face shape or hair style. Beautiful flat velvet bow wraps around the front of the hat then dips down the sides not only for a fabulous design statement but also to allow a secure fit.

Half hats are a brimless shallow hat that usually sits flat on top of the crown - like an extra wide bandeau. The half hat was created by Lilly Dache, who won an American Designer award for it in 1941. Dior designed veiled half hats beginning in 1947. They remained popular during the 1950s and morphed into variations including openwork half-hats comprised of a wired piping frame with flowers, feathers or other trims.* Half hats are perfect for almost every hairstyle or face shape. Check out Madge's article on half hats

Mark/Label: Miss Frederics of John Frederics

This label was a partnership of John Pico Harberger (a/k/a "John Pico John" or "Mr. John") and Frederic Hirst. The Coty awards gave John-Frederics a special award for millinery in 1943. When Mr. John and Frederic Hirst dissolved their partnership in 1948, Mr. John formed the Mr. John label. Frederic Hirst kept the John-Frederics label and also designed hats as "Mr. Fred." After the split Mr. Fred did not fare as well as Mr. John. John-Frederics was mentioned and/or advertised in fashion magazines in the 1920s through the 1950s. John Frederics Charmer hats were advertised in 1950s magazines, after Mr. John left the label. The Philadelphia Museum of Art has 20 hats in its on-line collection, including examples before and after the partnership split. The Metropolitan Museum of Art has 44 hats, including this innovative turban made of wool yarn and beads circa 1937-41, a turban made of twisted straw braid and silk circa 1940 (and a variation in different colors), an amazing medieval inspired toque with donut shapes dripping with fringe circa 1941, and a spangled snood circa 1942. Labels: John Frederics Made to Order, John Frederics, John Frederics Charmer (less expensive line), "Sweet Young Things" "Miss Frederics."

              About Mr. John:
John Pico John (Mr. John), (1906-1993), born John Pico Harberger, Munich. Before forming the Mr. John label, he was a partner with Frederic Hirst in John-Frederics (1927 to 1948), and during that period designed the hats for Gone With The Wind. Mr. John's designs were popular in the 1940s through the 1970s. Clients included stars of film, stage, opera and high society -- Duchess of Windsor, Gloria Swanson, Gloria Vanderbilt, Mary Pickford, Lauren Bacall, Joan Crawford and Rosalind Russell. He and Cecil Beaton designed the hats for My Fair Lady. His hats were worn by Marlene Dietrich in Shanghai Express, by Greta Garbo in The Painted Veil and by Marilyn Monroe in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. At its peak his business employed 150 and brought in over $7 million a year. Mr. John was one of New York's great entertainers, known for his outrageous behavior. When he launched a new collection he publicized it in Mr. John's Fashion News, using celebrities as models. He retired in the 1970s, complaining that women's fashion was dead, and that women had "'sold-out'" to "hairdressers who make orthopedic hairdos and french-fried curls." McDowell, p. 159-160. By then he was the world's richest milliner. He died at age 91. (New York Times Obituary dated June 29, 1993). Several examples of Mr. John's hats are in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Labels include Mr. John Boutique, Mr. John Classic (1960s), Mr. John Caprice (1960s label for whimsies), Mr. John Moderne, Mr. John Signature Series, Mr. John Empress, Mr. John Sophisticate, Mr. John Debutante, Mr. John Sportif, Mr. John Young Elegants.
