Famous for modernizing the art of petit and needlepoint, her purses sold in high end stores, and are collectors’ items today.  In an era when women did not lead businesses, she built a company that employed over 20,000 workers and controlled 90% of a global market. Shenley-Gordon was a high fashion ladies shop in Louisville founded in 1919 as Shenley's. In 1932 the store purchased the entire inventory of another local milliner, Gordon's and changed their name to Shenley-Gordon.  The store was purchased in 1959 by then manager Jacob Gallin.  His wife Ruth advertised hats under her name and her photo was on hatboxes and in store ads.  From our research it appears the store closed in the late 60s.

Gerber was a major department store in Memphis Tennessee and was started by John Gerber in 1880 and expanded over the years, eventually taking an entire downtown block. Gerber caused a sensation in 1949 with the first escalator in Memphis.   Other suburban Gerber outlets soon followed.  After a series of major fires in the 1960s the store was closed for good in 1974.  The other locations were also closed one by one.  The building was torn down in the 1980s and a hotel is now in it's place.
