Marcel Boucher started his one costume jewelry company in 1937 after stints at Cartier and Mazer Brothers.  Born in Paris, he moved with Cartier to New York City.  Boucher was known for his bold designs of animals, plants and people as well as his enamel work.  He married late in life to his former assistant, Sandra, who ran the company after his death in 1964 through 1972.  Boucher used many different marks which can help date the pieces.   “MB Sterling” - 1942 and 1944. From 1944 and 1949 pieces may have a Phrygian cap above his initials. After 1944, pieces may have either of the following marks -  “Marcel Boucher” or “Boucher.” If the piece has the copyright symbol it is after 1955.  Serial number dating may be found here.

This 1970s Egyptian-style necklace is an absolute stunner.  14 bright gold snake chains with a large center rectangle of gold.  Inset is a large oval of faux amber. The center section is thick adding some very interesting dimension to this chocker.  Extender chain with hook closure.

Monet was founded in 1927 as Monocraft by brothers Michael and Joseph Chernow to capitalize on the popularity of monogramming. They developed a process for metal monogramming first for autos and later for handbags. Late in the 30s, they began to produce jewelry monograms such as watch fobs. The true Monet that we know today came from their hiring of Edmond Mario Granville. Coming to Monocraft with a background in fine jewelry from Cartier, Granville remained the company’s sole designer until the late 1950s and was an executive designer until his death in 1969. His leadership would span the company’s humble beginnings as Monocraft to its eventual acclaim as Monet. The company passed through several owners and was purchased by Liz Claiborne in 2000. Monet Group, which includes Trifari and Marvella like so many other brand names in CJ was moved out of the country and produces much lesser quality.
