Extraordinary opportunity to own an authentic Chupalla hat from Donde Golpea El Monito in Santiago, Chile. The chupalla is a traditional Chilean horseman's hat made of straw. The name comes from achupalla a local name given to a bromelia plant from which the hats were originally made. Now these had are made from all types of straw. This distinctive design features straight sides on the crown, flat top and wide brim. Black fabric hatband and leather chin strap. Leather sweatband.
Donde Golpea El Monito is a very famous hat shop located in Santiago Chile. Founded in 1915 José González Noriega as the Fábricas Unidas Americanas de Sobreros (United American Factory of Hats). in 1922 the shop added a mechanical man in a hat puppet as advertising. The puppet was set inside the storefront window and would hit the glass. The puppet soon became the hit of the neighborhood and was soon given the nickname Donde Golpea el Monito (Where the Monkey Hits). Sensing a good thing the owners changed the name of the shop. Condition: Very good. There is some glue residue shown in the final photo. It looks like some of the bows in the back were reattached at some point. This is not noticeable when worn.

Don Anderson was a prominent milliner from the 1950s -1980s. Born in International Falls he studied art at Parsons School of Design. Frustrated with his career he was standing in front of millinery supply house when the proprietor asked if he was interested in the hat business. A millinery career was born. Through the years he designed and worked with Chanda, John-Fredericks and Lilly Dache. Later Anderson was a licensee for Halston.
