Exquisite beaded handbag with bright floral embroidery. Intricate white beading on both sides and strap. Floral embroidery in the middle of the front in tones of red, green, pink and brown. Fold over gold metal top, covered in beading, clicks into place. One main compartment plus two small ones. Gold metal hardware and scalloped beading on flap. Hand beaded in Hong Kong in the 1950s when the territory was the center of high quality beaded bags and jewelry.

Bud and John Fenwick and partner Ovid Sailors established Fenwick & Sailors in Hollywood in the late 1940s. The company was well known for very high-quality men’s jewelry and accessories. In addition to original designs, they made jewelry with the logos of major companies. One of their most famous customers was Bob Hope who gave out their cufflinks as gifts during his USO trips. The business was sold sometime in the late 1970s.

Emanuel Cohn and Carl Rosenberger started Coro in1901 as a small accessories store on Broadway in New York City. The company officially changed its name to Coro Inc., a combination of the two names, in 1943. Coro was once one of the largest costume jewelry companies in the world and employed many distinctive designers including Adolph Katz, design director; Gene Verecchio; Oscar Placco; Robert Geissmann and Massa Raimond. Parisian jewelry Louis Rousselet (1892-1980) was known for his glass and Galalith beadwork and pearls. His business grew into one of the largest bead suppliers in the world and workers trained for years to learn his techniques. Rousselet was a true artist creating new types and innovative designs for glass beads and pearls. His work appeared in the boutiques of Coco Chanel as well as Jaques Fath and Piere Balmain. His jewelry was worn by many celebrities including movie and theater stars. His daughter continued on with the business which eventually closed in the 1970s. Most of his jewelry was unsigned and came with a paper tag. His components and findings are unique and recognizable. Signed pieces are very rare.

Oromesh was a mark used by Whiting & Davis during the 1950s.
Whiting & Davis originally opened as the Wade, Davis & Co in 1876. In 1880 Charles Whiting joined the company and worked is way up the company from errand boy to artisan to the New York sales rep in ten years. In 1892, Charles Whiting wove by hand the first Whiting & Davis handbag from gold metal mesh, creating one of the first “It” handbags. The company also created their second iconic design, the snake bracelet late in the 1890s.
By 1896, Charles Whiting had partnered with company co-founder Edward Davis and the name Whiting & Davis was born. Throughout the 20th century, Whiting & Davis created highly sought after metal mesh handbags, jewelry, and other accessories. The company is still in existence today using different jewelry marks to differentiate new items from vintage pieces.

Maud Hundley with her daughter Betty Carrico started their home workroom in 1947 in Anchorage, a suburb of Louisville Kentucky. She got her start sewing for the Red Cross during WW II. Customers picked both the design and the frame. Hundley's studio moved to Middletown, KY in the 1960s and closed after her death in 1985.
