His wife Ruth advertised hats under her name and her photo was on hatboxes and in ads. From our research, it appears the store closed in the late 60s.

Gerber was a major department store in Memphis Tennessee and was started by John Gerber in 1880 and expanded over the years, eventually taking an entire downtown block. Gerber caused a sensation in 1949 with the first escalator in Memphis. Other suburban Gerber outlets soon followed.  After a series of major fires in the 1960s, the store was closed for good in 1974. The other locations were also closed one by one. The building was torn down in the 1980s and a hotel is now in its place.

Lucy Puci (Loosey Poosey) was the brainchild of Lucylle Smith Gilbert who rose from apprentice to principal designer for Chicago based millinery company Lemington Inc. Gilbert designed hats for first ladies Mamie Eisenhower and Pat Nixon. Another loyal hat buyer was Carol Channing. In the company’s heyday, the company produced over 900 hats per day under various labels. Gilbert, famous for designing 10 – 15 different hat styles per day, had a very interesting way of working. Instead of sketching her ideas she drew inspiration from the materials on hand. Other labels by the company were Lemington and Sam Budwig. Lemington closed sometime in the late 1960s. Gilbert died in 1994 at the age of 86.
Breton style which means a rounded or flat-crowned hat with a brim that turns up around the edges, originally worn by peasants in Brittany, a region in France.
Innes was a major department store in Wichita, Kansas.

John Pico John (Mr. John), (1906-1993), born John Pico Harberger, Munich. Before forming the Mr. John label, he was a partner with Frederic Hirst in John-Frederics (1927 to 1948), and during that period designed the hats for Gone With The Wind. Mr. John's designs were popular in the 1940s through the 1970s. Clients included stars of film, stage, opera and high society -- Duchess of Windsor, Gloria Swanson, Gloria Vanderbilt, Mary Pickford, Lauren Bacall, Joan Crawford, and Rosalind Russell. He and Cecil Beaton designed the hats for My Fair Lady. His hats were worn by Marlene Dietrich in Shanghai Express, by Greta Garbo in The Painted Veil and by Marilyn Monroe in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. At its peak, his business employed 150 and brought in over $7 million a year. Mr. John was one of New York's great entertainers, known for his outrageous behavior. When he launched a new collection he publicized it in Mr. John's Fashion News, using celebrities as models. He retired in the 1970s, complaining that women's fashion was dead and that women had "'sold-out'" to "hairdressers who make orthopedic hairdos and french-fried curls." McDowell, p. 159-160. By then he was the world's richest milliner. He died at age 91. (New York Times Obituary dated June 29, 1993). Several examples of Mr. John's hats are in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Labels include Mr. John Boutique, Mr. John Classic (1960s), Mr. John Caprice (1960s label for whimsies), Mr. John Moderne, Mr. John Signature Series, Mr. John Empress, Mr. John Sophisticate, Mr. John Debutante, Mr. John Sportif, Mr. John Young Elegants.
