  • Outstanding collector's hat designed by Gabriela Ligenza
  • Made by the legendary milliner Marzi Brothers in Florence.
  • High crown Breton in purple knit and horsehair.
  • Wide-brim.

Hair taken from the manes and tails of horses was widely used in millinery in the 19th Century to that 1910s. It was used much less in later decades as synthetic horsehair became available. Most 20th century hats, like this one, are made of synthetic horsehair, usually crinoline.

British milliner Gabriela Ligenza has been designing bespoke hats for over 25 years and divides her time between London and Florence. Her hat quality is comparable to Phillip Treacy and Steven Jones. This hat was made by the Marzi Brothers, another legendary milliner who has been in business since 1924.

This label was a partnership of John Pico Harberger (a/k/a "John Pico John" or "Mr. John") and Frederic Hirst. The Coty awards gave John-Frederics a special award for millinery in 1943. When Mr. John and Frederic Hirst dissolved their partnership in 1948, Mr. John formed the Mr. John label. Frederic Hirst kept the John-Frederics label and also designed hats as "Mr. Fred." After the split, Mr. Fred did not fare as well as Mr. John. John-Frederics was mentioned and/or advertised in fashion magazines in the 1920s through the 1950s. John Frederics Charmer hats were advertised in 1950s magazines after Mr. John left the label. The Philadelphia Museum of Art has 20 hats in its online collection, including examples before and after the partnership split. The Metropolitan Museum of Art has 44 hats, including this innovative turban made of wool yarn and beads circa 1937-41, a turban made of twisted straw braid and silk circa 1940 (and a variation in different colors), an amazing medieval inspired toque with donut shapes dripping with fringe circa 1941, and a spangled snood circa 1942. Missoni is a high-end Italian fashion house based in Varese and known for its colorful knitwear designs. The company was founded by Ottavio ("Tai") and Rosita Missoni in 1953.

Eunice Johnson founded the Ebony Fashion Fair (EFF) in 1958. Johnson was co-owner, with her husband, of Chicago-based Johnson Publishing Company, the publisher of Ebony Magazine. The annual fashion show featured male and female models of mostly African-American descent modeling fashions from top European designers such as Yves St Laurent, Oscar de la Renta, Pierre Cardin, Paco Rabanne, Givenchy, Jean Paul Gaultier, Valentino, and Emanuel Ungaro. Johnson's aim was to bring high fashion couture to the African-American woman who often didn't have access to the best shops.

Many African-American fashion designers got their start with the show including Stephen Burrows, Patrick Kelly, and Willi Smith. The EFF ended in 2009 after the death of Eunice Johnson. Since her passing, Johnson Publishing has been gradually deaccessioning the fashion archive. This collection from Madge includes some of the last pieces that will be made available.

Montana, born in Paris in 1949, got his start in London the 1960s selling his line of Papier-mâché jewelry. Back in Paris at the start of the 1970s he worked with the leather accessory company. MacDouglas. He launched his own line in 1977 and become famous as one the most important designers of the 1980s. His clothes were known for their powerful. masculine lines. Jackets usually had shoulder pads. His designs were highly prized by high powered women. In the late 80s he also designed for Lanvin for several years.

The Ebony Fashion Fair (EFF) was founded in 1958 by Eunice Johnson, co-founder with her husband of Chicago-based Johnson Publishing Company, publisher of Ebony Magazine. The annual fashion show featured male and female models of mostly African-American descent modeling fashions from top European designers such as: Yves St Laurent, Oscar de la Renta, Pierre Cardin, Paco Rabanne, Givenchy, Jean Paul Gaultier, Valentino and Emanuel Ungaro. Johnson's aim was to bring high fashion couture to the African-American woman who often didn't have access to the best shops.

Many African-American fashion designers got their start with the show including Stephen Burrows, Patrick Kelly and Willi Smith. EFF ended in 2019 after the death of Johnson. Johnson Publishing has been gradually deaccessioning the fashions since that time. This collection from Madge includes some of the last pieces made available.
