Schiaparelli, Elsa, Paris. (1890-1973). Italian born, very interested in the Surrealists, close friend of Salvador Dali. Her "madcap," a knitted tube that could be worn in many shapes, introduced in 1930, brought her public acclaim. She produced very tiny hats, huge hats, shoe hats, a pincushion hat, television hat, lamb chop hat, clown's pointed hat, and a hat shaped like a brain, to name a few. She was very famous in the 1930s. She collaborated with Salvador Dali throughout the 1930s, their most famous creation being the shoe hat. She also collaborated with artists Bebe Berard, Jean Cocteau, Vertes, Jean Hugo, Van Dongen, Elsa Triolet and Louis Aragon. and photographers Hoyningen-Huene, Horst, Cecil Beaton and Man Ray. In 1930 her business employed 2,000 people at 26 locations. Her famous customers included Lauren Bacall, Katherine Hepburn, Claudette Colbert, Merle Oberon, and Marlene Dietrich. During World War II she fled to the U.S. and engaged in relief work until the invasion ended and she returned to Paris. She closed her store in 1954, but a licensing deal in the U.S. allowed hats to continue to be distributed under her label in the U.S. until her death. Mentioned and/or advertised in fashion magazines from 1930s through 1960s.*

HOW TO FIND YOUR HAT SIZE

1. Pull a fabric tape measure or length of string around your head just slightly above the ear, across the mid-forehead, completely circling your head.

2. Hold the tape firmly, but not too tightly. You are measuring your head exactly
where the hat will sit in either inches or centimeters.

3. If your measurement falls between sizes, choose the next largest size.
